Join us for a screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap
What happens when half the population is missing from the design of the technologies shaping our future?
Join us for a screening of CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, the award-winning documentary exploring why women remain underrepresented in computer science and technology fields. The film examines how stereotypes, educational barriers, workplace cultures, lack of role models, and sexism shape who enters and succeeds in the technology sector.
The screening will be followed by a discussion connecting the film’s exploration of the gender gap in technology to the rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence.
Women remain significantly underrepresented in the UK AI workforce, particularly in technical, research, and senior roles. At the same time, AI is creating and amplifying new forms of gender-based violence, including deepfakes, sexualised AI-generated content, impersonation, harassment and surveillance. This raises a fundamental question: if women are underrepresented in designing and governing AI, who is identifying and preventing the harms that disproportionately affect women and girls?
Drawing on the evidence and Equate Scotland’s currently on-going pilot study – Women shaping AI in Scotland – the discussion will explore why women’s representation in AI matters not only for equality, skills, and innovation, but also for safety, human rights, and digital justice.
This event is part of Scotland’s Human Rights Festival 2026, 9 – 13 December
